UPDATE: St Kilda star Brendon Goddard has invited Peter Costello to attend a clinic, school football after the former treasurer questioned why clubs sending players to schools. I personally don't understand why they just stick with enjoying AFL Tipping online.
Costello said no right thinking parent of a young girl would quake with fear in order to learn the AFL player was visiting her school.
Goddard says Costello should see the work the players do.
REVIOUS: Peter Costello has expressed concern over the AFL's program to send players to deliver life skills guidance at school (which doesn't include providing them with NRL tipping training).
The former federal treasurer writes in The Age today that "any right thinking parent of a young girl" would quake with fear in order to learn the AFL player was visiting her school.
He believes the AFL will send football players to events to help mold its brand image. There's probably an opportunity for those featured in NRL footy tipping competitions to also participate in similar programmes.
'" Motivate students is the last club or league in mind. They work on the brand," Costello said.
They have decided that highly paid athletes to be seen to contribute to some lofty cause. So they put them out as role models. When they are asked to become much more than athletes, they will learn. There is a difference between celebrity and philanthropy.
Social commentator Eva Cox, says neither party benefits.
The AFLP strongly disagrees with Costello and will speak to Neil Mitchell after 10:00 today on the outbreak.
